FAQ

From January 29, 2024 at 3:00 p.m., e-mails can no longer be forwarded to a non-university e-mail address, and all previous forwards will be stopped.

There is a high risk of e-mail fraud, data leakage or violation of data protection requirements when e-mails are forwarded. At the same time, forwarded emails also make it difficult to identify fraudulent emails, because in this case the email is probably answered from a non-university email address, and the user does not see additional sender information in the university's email server on the non-university email server. By forwarding an e-mail sent to the university's e-mail address to an external address, the user may violate data protection requirements, because the information intended for the university ends up in the possession of third parties as a result of forwarding.

In addition, on February 1, 2024, Google will update its anti-spam rules and set new limits on the number of incoming messages. The amount of emails sent to Gmail from university email addresses significantly exceeds the new limits. According to the information technology department, in this case, situations where addressed letters do not reach the non-university e-mail box and the user does not receive the letters would become more frequent.

University users who have forwarded their @ut.ee mailbox to a non-university e-mail address. According to the information technology department, there were 13,564 of them as of the end of October.

The user can stop forwarding e-mails himself or wait until January 29, 2024, when the information technology department will stop forwarding for all UT user accounts. See instructions at the top of the page on how to stop email forwarding.

A user who has not forwarded their email address does not need to do anything. If desired, people using different e-mail addresses can connect their mailboxes to the e-mail reading application both on a computer and on a smart device in order to read their e-mails. You can find the links to the instructions at the top of the page.

The University of Tartu uses the cloud-based Microsoft Online Exchange service as an e-mail solution. The university e-mail can be read on the website https://kiri.ut.ee or https://mail365.ut.ee, and it can also be done with all the most common e-mail applications on Windows, Apple and Linux computers as well as on smart devices with Apple and Android software.
