Differences and use cases
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (M365 Copilot Chat) is an AI-based chatbot that searches the web to answer your prompts. It is a free feature included in user account package for University of Tartu employees and students. When using Copilot Chat with a University of Tartu user account, you have the option to view your chat history. Your data is securely stored, and Microsoft does not use your input data to train its AI.
- Copilot Chat is well-suited for quick information searches, generating new ideas and content, summarizing large amounts of information, and simplifying workflows.

Microsoft 365 Copilot (M365 Copilot) is an AI-based tool integrated into Microsoft 365 applications (SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.). This means that within the application, there is a chatbot that brings information from both web materials and your own documents or other Microsoft applications.
A paid license is required to use Copilot. To order a license, fill out an application in the requests portal.
When using Copilot with a University of Tartu user account, you have the option to view your chat history. Your data is securely stored, and Microsoft does not use your input data to train its AI.
Copilot is well-suited for creating and editing documents, simplifying data analysis, summarizing meetings, and automating workflows.
Copilot functionality can be used both directly in applications and on the web.
For example:
- Copilot searches for relevant sources in your SharePoint and OneDrive files based on the prompt you provide.
- When creating a Word document, you can use the chatbot to search for information or generate images.
- It can find email subjects and content in Outlook and summarize them.

Attention:
- If you have a Copilot license, when using Copilot Chat, you have the option to use the chatbot in two different modes: "Work" (searches work materials and, if necessary, also the web) or "Web" (searches only the web). Copilot Chat does not have access to Microsoft 365 work files like Copilot does.
- Copilot Chat does not have access to Microsoft 365 work files like Copilot does.
