In this guide, you will find instructions about upgrading to Windows 11.

Starting October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, technical support, or security patches for Windows 10.

IT departement recommends that you upgrade your existing operating system to Windows 11 early.

Preparation

The update is only visible to computers that meet the hardware and software requirements. If you have any questions, please contact IT helpdesk.

Before you start the upgrade, make sure that the following points are met:

  • Make sure that backup is turned on.
Make sure to back up your important files before upgrading. You can do this, for example, using OneDrive or another backup service (check Microsoft OneDrive).
  • Make sure that there are no updates other than Windows 11 under the Updates tab in Software Center. If there are other updates, they must be done first.
  • Make sure that your computer has enough free disk space to install Windows 11.
At least 32 GB of free space is recommended (check How to free up space on my computer?).
  • If you are using a laptop, make sure that the charger is connected during the installation.
This will help prevent unexpected shutdowns and ensure a smooth installation process.

Downloading the update

The speed of downloading updates depends on your internet speed. It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours for this process, during which you can continue with your normal work.

  1. Open the Software Center application on your computer.
  2. On the left-side tab, select Updates → in the window that opens, select Windows 11.
  3. In the window that opens, click the Install button.
  4. To confirm, click the Install button.
  5. The download will begin.
It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours for this process, during which you can continue with your normal work.

Installing

Before starting the installation, make sure you have saved any work in progress.

We recommend starting this process at the end of the workday, as you will not be able to use your computer for other activities at the same time.

Your computer will automatically restart several times during the installation. The process can take 30 minutes to 2 hours.

  1. To start installing, you must restart your computer.
    1. If you want to do this immediately, select Restart now.
    2. If you want to schedule it (for example, at the end of the workday), select Snooze and remind me again in: and select the time suitable for you.
    3. Then click OK.
