Introduction

An overview of the possibilities of publishing course materials at the University of Tartu. See also Tips for recording a video lecture for lecturers and Environments for storing digital content at UT.

Recommendations for a digital content publishing solution:

  • Social media friendly (comes with thumbnail and description).
  • Title, ideally curriculum tag, target group (even the one for whom).
  • The description should reveal what prior knowledge this lecture contains.

Moodle

  • Solution details:
    • Moodle is an environment for creating and conducting e-courses.
    • Interfaced with UT study information system ÕIS.
    • Link to lecture recording app Panopto.
    • Link to webinar solution BigBlueButton.
    • Use is free for the university family.
  • Digital materials:
    • A large selection of digital content and tasks.
  • Access:
    • Student information synchronized with ÕIS.
    • It is possible to grant access to a guest (see additional material).

Panopto

  • Solution details:
    • Video lecture recording software panopto.ut.ee.
    • You can choose what is recorded: video camera image and audio, presentation and/or computer screen.
    • The recorded video can then be cut on the server, made private or made public on the terms you see fit.
  • Digital materials:
    • Video recordings, where it is possible to flexibly integrate various inputs.
  • Access:
    • By default limited to course participants.
    • It is possible to give access to those who know the direct link of the video (Anyone with the link).
    • It is possible to make it publicly accessible (access from the panopto.ut.ee home page without logging in, you can use search).

BigBlueButton

  • Solution details:
    • BigBlueButton is a freeware webinar system that is connected to the Moodle learning environment, but can also be used separately from the address https://button.ut.ee.
  • Digital materials:
    • BBB allows real-time sharing of video, audio, slides, computer screen, use of chat room, white board, survey and isolated rooms.

    • When recording a BBB session, all session activities (presentation, chat room conversation, webcam image, computer screen image, etc.) are saved.

    • Instructions for recordings:

      • Participants must be asked for permission to record!

      • It is recommended to record the lectures with Panopto, where you can better control the quality.

      • Unable to download recordings. You can download audio and webcam images, but not slides and its drawings.

      • Recordings cannot be edited/cut.

      • Recordings can be deleted.

  • Access:
    • Course participants can participate in the BBB session of the Moodle course.
    • The recording is also accessible from outside the Moodle course via the link.

Screen recording solutions

  • Panopto:
  • Teams:
    • Teams allows you to make a video session "with yourself" where you can share the screen and comment on the content
  • Screencast-O-Matic, screen recording software:
    • The free version allows you to create videos up to 15-minutes.
  • Da Vinci Resolve, good video editor.

UTTV

  • Solution details:
    • Media content sharing environment developed by the University of Tartu.
  • Digital materials:
    • Video recordings.
  • Access:
    • Only those people who have an active study period based on ÕIS can add videos.
    • Preferably public.

Sisu@UT

  • Solution details:
    • The tool is intended for creating web pages related to the university's teaching, research and administrative work.
  • Digital materials:
    • Web pages that can be rich in content.
    • Includes H5P interactive content creation module, Check Guide: using H5P.
  • Access:
    • Intended for public sharing, option to place a thumbnail, which leads to the home page of sisu.ut.ee.

  • Solution details:
    • Public cloud service.
  • Digital materials:
    • Video recordings.

Courses

  • Solution details:
    • The solution for sharing lecture information and materials used at the UT Institute of Computer Science (https://courses.cs.ut.ee).
      • In use since 2005.
    • The solution used at the UT Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (https://courses.ms.ut.ee).
      • In use since 2016.
  • Digital materials:
    • Lecture materials.
  • Access:
    • Generally public.
    • It is possible to restrict based on a password or a list of students.
    • The list of students must be imported and kept in order.

Wiki.ut.ee

  • Solution details:
    • Knowledge management solution.
    • Based on Atlassian Confluence.
  • Digital materials:
    • Online wiki articles that can add media content. Lots of automation.
  • Access:
    • Generally for university family use (as of March 2020, 2,000 user licenses, of which ~1,000 are in use).
    • Anonymous access can be shared.

  • Solution details:
    • The official website of the University of Tartu.
  • Digital materials:
    • News, information and materials.
  • Access:
    • Public.

  • Solution details:
    • Powerful video portal software for internal organization use.
  • Digital materials:
    • Video recordings.
  • Access:
    • It is possible to distribute to individual users, workgroups or the entire university.
    • It is not possible to share with the public at this time.

Worksup

  • Solution details:
    • Web based platform.
    • Anyone with a university e-mail address can use the base license.
  • Digital materials:
    • Live broadcasts and video sharing.
    • Sharing materials and displaying a program.
    • Communication with participants and asking questions.
  • Access:
    • Participation using the event ID.
    • You can participate both by registering as a participant and anonymously.
