In this guide, you will find instructions about data solutions for distance work.

What is the adequate data connection speed?

General recommendation - at least 10 Mbps per person working remotely

We recommend https://speedtest.net to test your internet connection speed

  • in the case of live streaming, in addition to upload and download speed, ping plays a role, which should not exceed 10ms

If possible, prefer a cable connection

Fixed connection should be the first preference for using the Internet

Telia instructions:

  • If you have a fixed internet connection at home, you can temporarily increase the speed if you wish, but it depends on the location and technology.
  • In the optical network it is always possible, in the copper network it depends on the situation (including the length of the customer's line).
  • Each user can change the speed themselves in Telia's self-service portal or, in the case of Telia TV, in the TV remote: My services >> Internet. If necessary, a private customer can call Telia's helpline 123 to ask for help.
  • If you do not have a permanent internet connection at home, you can check whether and at what speed you can get the service at home in Telia's self-service environment https://www.telia.ee/era/koduinternet/; if suitable, you can also order a connection in the same environment.

https://www.levikom.ee/ - you can also find out here whether and how quickly they could provide a connection

Telia mobile instructions

Telia instructions:

  • Mobile internet is a shared resource worldwide from a technological point of view, so in case of a sudden increase in load in individual places, there may be speed problems (fixed connection does not have this).
  • Mobile internet is available in UT employees' mobile phones.
  • If the employee's mobile phone has already used 38 GB of internet in one month, he will receive an SMS notification that the volume has reached 80%.
    • It is possible to reply to this SMS and order an additional capacity of preferably 15 GB.
    • There is no additional charge for this. Unfortunately, the SMS in the system has a general content that refers to an additional fee, which does not apply to UT.
    • In general, 48 GB should satisfy the needs of the majority of users for work and studies.
    • However, if you use a lot of multimedia (Youtube, etc.), this capacity may prove to be insufficient, and then it is necessary to order additional capacity in increments of 15 GB.
  • With his smartphone, a UT employee can also share the mobile internet with his other device (e.g. laptop) via Wi-Fi on the "hot spot" principle.
    • However, this could be a reasonable option in case of low usage, as the hotspot loads the resource of the sharing smartphone quite hard (the phone heats up and the battery drains).
    • If a UT employee has another internet device (laptop with SIM card, tablet, etc.) in addition to a mobile phone, a data package with a monthly capacity of 100 GB has been selected for it.
    • You cannot make calls or send messages with this package.
    • If the 100 GB monthly capacity of the data package should be full, please send the card number, user name and information about adding the package capacity to the e-mail address helpdesk@ut.ee.

Instructions for communication devices

If a UT employee has a device with card capability, but it does not yet have a SIM card, we recommend adding it there.

  • If you want a SIM card, please an e-mail to to helpdesk@ut.ee.
  • Adding a data card does not incur additional costs in terms of the subscription fee.
  • If there is only a data card, the monthly fee for the data card is €1.80.

Telia: If a UT employee's home is not suitable for using the internet with their existing mobile device and a fixed connection is not available:
