The role of binaries in the shaping of evolved nebulae

In this seminar, we will review the importance of binary systems for our
understanding of the development of complex, non-spherical nebulae around
evolved stars of low to intermediate initial masses. We will cover some of the
few examples of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in binary systems for which
orbital parameters are relatively well known, the phenomenology shown by nebulae
around post-AGBs (known as pre-planetary nebulae or pPNe), and the puzzling case
of planetary nebulae (PNe) around post-common envelope (post-CE) binary systems.
