This guide provides instructions on how to export passwords from a web browser and import them into a password manager.

The University of Tartu recommends exporting all passwords from web browsers before using a password manager.

Before exporting passwords, make sure all saved passwords are strong. If necessary, generate new strong passwords and change them in the respective environments.

Workflow for exporting passwords:

  1. export saved passwords from your web browser
  2. import passwords into the preferred password manager and delete the password file(s) created during the export
  3. delete saved passwords from the web browser

Export passwords (Windows)

  1. Open the Google Chrome web broswer.

  2. In the top right of the screen, select You ProfilePasswords Passwords.

  3. In the Password manager panel, select MoreMoreand click Export passwords.
  4. Click Export passwords.
  5. Select a suitable location where to save the file and click Save.
  6. In the selected location, the Chrome Passwords.csv file will be created. This is the file you will need to import into your password manager.
  1. Open the Microsoft Edge web browser.
  2. In the top right of the screen, open the menu  and choose Settings.
  3. In the window that opens, select Passwords.
  4. Move to the Saved passwords section, select More actions and choose Export passwords.
  5. Select Export passwords.
  6. Select a suitable location where to save the file and click Save.
  7. In the selected location, the Microsoft Edge Passwords.csv file will be created. This is the file you will need to import into your password manager.
  1. Open the Mozilla Firefox web browser.
  2. In the top right of the screen, open the menu  and select Passwords.

  3. In the window that opens, select menu  and choose Export Logins...
  4. Click Export.
  5. Select a suitable location where to save the file and click Save.
  6. In the selected location, the logins.csv file will be created. This is the file you will need to import into your password manager.

Import passwords into a password manager

If you have followed the password exporting guide, you can easily transfer the data to Bitwarden as follows:

  1. Open Bitwarden online (https://vault.bitwarden.com) and log in.
  2. In the menu, select Tools → Import data → choose the format of the import file → click Choose file and select the file you imported from your web browser → click Import data.
  3. Delete the password file(s) created during the export.

If you have followed the password exporting guide, you can easily transfer the data to LastPass as follows:

  1. Open LastPass online (https://lastpass.com) and log in.
  2. In the menu, select Advanced Options → Import.
  3. Delete the password file(s) created during the export

If you have followed the password exporting guide, you can easily transfer the data to KeePassXC as follows:

  1. Open the KeePassXC application.
  2. In the menu, select Database → Import → CSV file.
  3. Delete the password file(s) created during the export.
  1. Open the Keychain Access application  on your Mac device, select File → Import Items.

  2. Select the entries you want to import.

  3. In the Destination Keychain popup, select Keychainwhere to import the entries and click Open.
  4. Delete the password file(s) created during the export

Paroolide kustutamine (Windows)

  1. Open the Chrome menuand select Settings.
  2. Select Autofill in the left side panel.
  3. Open Password manager.
  4. Select Check passwords.
  5. Locate the password you would like to delete, click More actions and select Remove password.
  6. To confirm removing the password, select Remove password.

  1. Delete individual passwords:
    1. Type about:logins in the address bar.
    2. Locate the password you would like to delete and click Remove.

    3. To confirm, click Remove.
  2. Delete all passwords:
    1. Type about:logins in the address bar.
    2. Open the menu and select Remove All Logins.
    3. Add a checkmark in front of Yes, remove this login and click Remove.
  1. Delete individual passwords:
    1. Enter edge://settings/passwords in the address bar.

    2. Select the password you would like to delete and click Delete.
  2. Delete all passwords:
    1. Enter edge://settings/passwords in the address bar.
    2. Select all passwords by clicking the first box and click Delete.

  3. To turn off automatic password saving, untick the Offer to save passwords option.
