In this guide, you will find instructions on how to connect via GlobalProtect VPN on a Linux device.

The IT department recommends using the EduVPN client, check EduVPN connection (Linux).

This guide is made using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version.

  • When entering commands, make sure you are entering the correct version, as the commands in the guide may be out of date.
  • Make sure that behind each command you put your own operating system-oriented file extension (with the end .deb if you are using Debian or Ubuntu and .rpm when using CentOS or Red Hat)

titleSetting up the VPN client
  1. Download the VPN package suitable for your Linux distribution.
    1. Attachments

  2. Install the downloaded software with package manager.

    sudo dpkg -i GlobalProtect_UI_focal_deb-6.1.1.0-49.deb


  3. If you encounter any problems during the execution of this command, it is possible that a certain module is missing from your computer, which must be downloaded (sudo apt-get install <certain module name>) and then use the previous command again.

    sudo dpkg -i GlobalProtect_UI_focal_deb-6.1.1.0-49.deb

titleEstablishing a VPN connection
  1. NB! To establish a connection, the GlobalProtect software must be installed on your computer.
    To start the software, open the all applications tab from the bottom left corner (9 dots).
  2. Click on the GlobalProtect icon.
  3. A menu will appear, enter tunnel2.ut.ee and click Connect.

  4. Enter the username and password of your University of Tartu account (in the format username@ut.ee).

titleDisconnecting a VPN connection
  1. To disconnect an active VPN connection, open the GlobalProtect application.
  2. Click the Disconnect button.
