In this guide, you will find instructions about LastPass password manager setup.

LastPass is an easy to use and secure password manager that works with different devices:

  • iOS devices - iPad, iPhone, iMac, Apple MacBook
  • Android devices
  • Windows OS computers, laptops and tablets
  • Linux

About LastPass

Pros:

  • User-friendly interface and easy to set up
  • Supports multi-factor authentication
  • Auto-fills passwords on websites and apps
  • Syncs across devices
  • Smart device applications available
  • Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions are available

Cons:

  • There have been errors in the use of the service in the past
  • The free version only allows one device type (for example only computers or only smart devices)
  • The premium version can be expensive 
  • No option to use offline

Summary: LastPass is best for users who prioritize ease of use and seamless integration with websites and apps. It's user friendly, supports multi-factor authentication, and syncs across devices. 

  1. Open the LastPass user registration website (https://lastpass.com/create-account.php).
  2. The user registration form opens.
  3. In the Email address field, enter the desired email address.
  4. In the Master password field, enter the desired master password. We recommend generating a strong password that must meet the following requirements:
    1. at least 12 letters long
    2. contains at least 1 digit
    3. at least 1 small character
    4. at least 1 capital letter
    5. cannot be your e-mail address
    6. the password strength indicator must show that the password is strong (green color)
       
  5. In the Reminder (Optional) field, you can add a hint to your password in case you forget it.
    Tips:
    1. do not add any part of your password or personal data (e.g. personal identification number, name, place of residence, etc.)
    2. use clues that only you understand and you don't share this information with others even if you are asked about it at work (for example, an incident that happened to you, but which you have never shared with anyone else)
    3. the hint information should be as hidden as possible, try to avoid personal preferences (e.g. favorite color, favorite food, name of your first dog)
  6. Click the Sign Up - It's free button.
  7. User successfully created.
    Select Install LastPass and the installation process will open depending on which web browser you are using.

Installation

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Type LastPass into search bar and select LastPass.
  3. Click the Get button to start the installation.
  4. Installation of the application will begin.
  5. After installation, open the application by pressing the Open button.
  6. Since we registered the user at the beginning of the guide, select No Thanks.
  7. Enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account) and click Log in.
    If you wish, you can add a check mark in front of the text Remember email, so that in the future the e-mail address box is automatically filled with your e-mail address.
    If you forgot your password, you can use the Get master password hint function (if you added it during registration).
    NB! The University of Tartu DOES NOT RECOMMEND using the Remember Master Password function to save your password.
  8. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.
  1. After registration, in the window that opens (https://www.lastpass.com/create-account/success?created=1), select Install LastPass.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Click Add extension to authorize the LastPass extension.
  4. Click on the Extensions button at the top right of the web browser.
  5. Click the Pin button next to LastPass: Free Password Manager.
  6. Click on the LastPass icon at the top right of the web browser to open it.
  7. Enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account) and click Log in.
  8. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.

  3. Select Add extension to authorize the LastPass extension.
  4. Click on the Extensions button at the top right of the web browser.
  5. Click the Show in toolbar button next to LastPass: Free Password Manager
  6. Click on the LastPass icon at the top right of the web browser to open it.
  7. Enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account) and click Log in.
  8. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.
  1. After registration, in the window that opens (https://www.lastpass.com/create-account/success?created=1), select Install LastPass.
  2. Click the Add to Firefox button.
  3. In the window that appears at the top right of the web browser, select Add.
  4. Click Accept to authorize the LastPass extension.
  5. In the upper right part of the web browser, it is confirmed that the web browser extension has been added. Click Okay.
  6. Click on the Extensions button at the top right of the web browser.
  7. Click the Settings button next to LastPass: Free Password Manager and select Pin to Toolbar.
  8. Click on the LastPass icon at the top right of the web browser to open it.
  9. Enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account) and click Log in.
  10. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.

  1. Open the LastPass website (https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php).
  2. Choose Mac from the menu, then click the Download button next to LastPass for Safari.
  3. You will be asked for permission to download the application. Click Allow.
  4. After downloading, a LastPass.dmg file will be created in the Downloads folder.
  5. To install, open the Downloads folder and click on LastPass.dmg.
  6. You will be asked for permission to open the downloaded application. Select Open.
  7. The LastPass Installer will open. Drag the LastPass icon to the → Application icon to start the installation.
  8. LastPass installation will begin.
  9. After installing the LastPass app, open it and enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account) and click Log in.

  10. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.

NB! You can activate the LastPass Safari extension only after Installing the Mac desktop application.

  1. Open the Safari web browser.

  2. In the upper left corner of the screen, select Safari menu → Settings.
  3. Open the Extensions tab and add a checkmark in front of the LastPass icon.
  4. You will be asked to confirm if you want to enable the LastPass extension. Select Turn On.
  5. A shortcut to the LastPass extension will appear in the Safari web browser.
    To open, click on the LastPass icon and enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account), then click Log in.
  6. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.

  2. Type LastPass password manager in the search bar and download the application by clicking Get → Install.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm that you want to install the app on your device.
  4. After installing the application, open it by pressing the Open button.
  5. Select Log In.
  6. Enter the e-mail address and password that you created in the first section of the guide (Creating an account), then click Log in.
  7. Select Use Face ID to use Face ID, if you don't want to use it, select I'll do it later.
  8. Upon successful login, the password manager will be displayed.
