Õppeaine on kindla teadmiste valdkonna õpetamise, õppimise ning õpiväljundite hindamise organiseeritud ühik. Õppeaine mahtu arvestatakse õppetöö ühikutes ehk Euroopa ainepunktisüsteemi ainepunktides (EAP). Ühele ainepunktile vastab 26 tundi üliõpilase tööd.

Õppeainetega seoses on oluline teada, et õppeainete info jaguneb kaheks:
Õppeaine üldandmed kirjeldavad õppeainet (eesmärgid, õpiväljundid, sisu lühikirjeldus, kohustuslikud eeldusained) ja üldjuhul neid igal õppeaastal ei muudeta.
Õppeaine ainekava luuakse versioon luuakse õppeainele igaks toimumise semestriks (vt ka ÕKE p 43ka ÕKE p 9). Ainele Ainesse registreerumine tähendab registreerumist ainekavaleõppeaine versiooni. Õppeainele Õppeainesse registreerumise eelduseks on see, et õppeainele on vormistatud ainekava ja ainekava olemas õppeaine versioon ja õppeaine versioon on registreerumiseks avatud.

The course is an organised unit of teaching, learning and assessment of learning outcomes of a certain area of knowledge. The volume of the course is calculated in credit points of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). One credit point corresponds to 26 hours of student’s work.

It is essential to know that information on courses is divided into two categories:
General information on the course describes the course (aims, learning outcomes, brief description of content, compulsory prerequisite courses), and, generally, it is not changed each academic year.
Course syllabus is is created for the course for each semester (see also Study Regulations p 439). Registration for the course means registration for the syllabus. A prerequisite for registration for the course is that a syllabus has been created for the course, and the syllabus is open for registration.
